Linen Cupboard Organisation:
- Do it on a cool day
- Have a cleared, clean table nearby for folding & repacking
- Remove everything & Group the items – Linen per room, spare curtaining, toiletries, tableware etc
- Anything that is not used any more or is torn, put aside to be donated or used as rags
- Wash anything that has become grubby because it hasn’t been used in a while or smells musty.
- Clean all the shelves & make sure they are dry before packing back
- Label shelves for easy identification for others (maids, children etc)
- Regularly used items must be kept on the most accessible shelves - front & centre
- Less regularly used items – higher up
- Use shelf dividers or pretty brackets to divide piles & prevent them from toppling.
- Leaving space between the piles for airing.
- Seasonal Comforters & blankets can be stored in vacuum linen storage bags to keep them clean & bug free.
- Fold towels into thirds lengthwise then into rectangles/squares the size of the shelf – edges facing inwards on the shelf to look neat. Rolling towels can also look neat & save space if the closet is small.
- Fold and put sheet, duvet cover & pillow case sets into the pillow case, this keeps the set together at all times.
- Group per room per shelf if you have enough space.
- Put washed linen at the bottom of the stack to allow you to rotate and have even wear of linen.
- Fold trimmed linen so that the trim shows & is then easy to identify.
- Tablecloths are best stored folded and hung over a wooden hanger (not a wire hanger). If there is no hanging space, fold flat & stack.
- Group matching cloths & napkins together, can use an old pillow case for this.
- If you use baskets for linen & cloths, make sure they are lined to avoid cloths hooking.
- Keep a tub of open baking soda or a bundle of chalk sticks to keep linen fresh.
- Keep wool items in vacuum packed bags to prevent moths etc.
- Always put things away clean.
Now stand back and admire a job well done!
